Data Protection Day - Know Your Rights

In 2006, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to introduce a a Data Protection Day, to be held each year on the 28th January. The idea behind Data Protection day is to celebrate our right to data protection and raise awareness of the law in this area. The day was not chosen as random: 28th January is the anniversary of Council of Europe's Convention 108 for the Protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data. This highly relevant piece of legislation has been the foundation and cornerstone for data protection and privacy for more than 30 years, not just in Europe, but all over the world. Data protection day is now celebrated globally, but outside of Europe it is known as “Privacy Day”. The Council of Europe described the importance of this day, saying:

Death of School Teacher after Asbestos Exposure - Who is Responsible for Managing the Risk of Asbestos?

Last week saw the sad news emerge of a primary school teacher who had passed away after contracting cancer as a result of exposure to asbestos in the workplace. Elizabeth Belt passed away aged 68 after battling mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure, for three years. An investigation into her death revealed that she frequently pinned students work to asbestos boards at various schools across North Lincolnshire where she worked.

Police Use Facebook to Bust “Crash for Cash” Personal Injury Claim Fraudsters

Insurance fraud is as much of a big problem in the UK as it is big business and year on year, drivers are forced to pay millions as result of fraudulent road traffic accident insurance claims (also known as 'crash for cash'). The net is closing in, however, and police in Wales recently unearthed the largest crash for cash scam in the UK, with 80 individuals convicted last December. The Welsh authorities managed to secure the evidence needed through social media and the humble art of 'facebook stalking'. This post looks at crash for cash and the use of social media in investigations.
